“Joy in the Morning” 24 x 36

Joy in the Morning was born from my family’s annual trip to the Oregon Country Fair. Over the past 35 years, we’ve attended this fair together, surrounded by music drifting through the trees, harmonies blending, and musicians playing joy into every corner. Beyond the music, the fair has always been about community—the reunion with friends we haven’t seen since the year before, the laughter of strangers becoming familiar, and the simple joy of being together again. Those moments of connection, celebration, and shared delight sparked the inspiration for this painting.

The cello, in particular, has always spoken to me as though it carries the very voice of the earth: deep, resonant, and grounding, yet filled with layers of emotion. When I painted the woman with her cello, I wanted to capture that feeling—the way music and community can move through us, lift our spirits, and carry hope and harmony into our lives.

This painting is about more than sound; it’s about the joy of being present, the beauty of shared experiences, and the way art and music can unite us. Heartfelt music rises like morning light, carrying hope, renewal, and the quiet reassurance that joy always returns.
