Years ago, early in our marriage, we took up beekeeping. It felt dreamy—hopeful, even poetic—to bring bees into our backyard. We read books, built the hive, and watched with wonder as the bees settled in. That first year, we harvested golden honey that tasted like wildflowers and sunshine.

Then came the hard years. One season, skunks tore apart the hive. Other times, the bees didn’t survive the winter. Still, we tried again. And while we never had a harvest like that first one, we learned something deeper: that the process—the caring, tending, and hoping—matters just as much as the outcome.
